PreNat

PreNat was developed by A.W.P. to offer a natural and safe antioxidant to be used in the feed of all animal species. PreNat improves the quality and the safety of the meat and eggs for human consumption, without usage of chemical antioxidants. PreNat contains polyphenols, tocopherol, carotenoids and other Pharma-grade Phytomolecules with strong antioxidant power that exert other beneficial effects on the animal health in general: such as anti-inflammatory action and the ability to counteract oxidative stress.

In scientific trials PreNat showed a protective and conservative effect against lipid oxidation equivalent to the effect of ethoxyquin.

PreNat is commonly used as preservative in the PET food as well, improving the health and the wellness of our companion animals.

Classification of PreNat

PreNat can be classified as primary and secondary antioxidant, according the following categorization:

• Primary antioxidant: for preventing oxidation set-up, through the suppression of free radicals
• Secondary antioxidant: scavenging of ROS (reactive oxygen species) through the suppression of starting oxidation process and breaking the chain of reactions that propagate the oxidation
• Tertiary antioxidants: repairing the oxidized molecules

Mode of action of some natural antioxidative molecules contained in PreNat

• Polyphenols are natural antioxidant commonly present in many foods:
  • They suppress the generation of free radicals, thus reducing the rate of oxidation by inhibiting the formation of or deactivating the active species and precursors of free radicals.
  • More frequently, they act as direct radical scavengers of the lipid peroxidation chain reactions (chain breakers).
• Tocopherol is a potent lipid soluble antioxidant as peroxyl radical scavenger:
  • If a suitable free radical is present, a non-radical product can be formed from the coupling of the free radical with the α-tocopheroxyl radical. This function maintains the integrity of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the membranes of cells and thus maintains their bioactivity
  • It is an efficient ROS scavenger (particularly 1O2), in various environmental conditions
  • It is estimated that a single molecule of tocopherol can degrade 120 1O2 molecules
  • The antioxidant capacity of tocopherol is in relation with its capability of donation of its phenolic hydrogen to free radicles.

• Carotenoids are a class of more than 750 naturally occurring pigments synthesized by plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria:
  • They act as anti-oxidants by quenching (deactivating) singlet oxygen and inhibiting the oxidation of fats
  • Some evidence suggests that carotenoids and/or their metabolites may upregulate the expression of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes via the activation of the nuclear factor’s dependent pathway
